The Drayton Valley Community Foundation is getting ready to party this summer.
Drayton Valley Community Foundation (DVCF) members Tara Middlemiss and Rob Mulligan paid a visit to Drayton Valley town council on Feb. 9 to share how well 2021’s street party went, and what they are planning for 2022.
DVCF’s first street party, held in August 2021, was described as a phenomenal success. The party grew out of DVCF’s street dinners, expanding to include live entertainment and activities. According to Middlemiss, their final estimate came in at 2500 attendees. She adds they planned to feed 900 people, but wound up feeding 1100.
Given that success, DVCF is now planning two street parties for 2022. The first will be held on Jun. 24, and the second on Aug. 19.
“We had tons of people asking if we could do them every Friday night or monthly,” said Middlemiss. “Obviously, that is just not doable. Summer is busy enough.”
The Jun. 24 event will be called the Kick-Off to Summer, and DVCF is planning to model it on food festivals such as A Taste of Edmonton. They are hoping to have eight restaurants to serve up food. Attendees will be given a meal ticket that they can redeem at one of the restaurants’ booths, with the option of purchasing more meal tickets. There will also be beer gardens, live music, and activities for the kids.
The Aug. 19 event will be the DVCF Community Dinner Street Party, and be similar to the event held in 2021. This time, they want to have two food vendors to cut down on the wait time for people to receive their meals.
According to DVCF officials, they already had their financials in order. The final cost of the 2021 event came in at $17,626, and they are projecting $18,626 for each event in 2022.
Their request from the Town was a grant of $5000 for each event, plus in kind support. The in kind support includes things like street closure signs and Brazeau County peace officers to provide security.
Drayton Valley Mayor Nancy Dodds was supportive of the plan, and applauded last year’s success.
“I know people are still talking about it. They are still buzzing in the community,” said Dodds.
Town council will be considering DVCF’s plan.
