A new cannabis production facility could be coming to Drayton Valley.
At the Town of Drayton Valley’s Nov. 24 meeting, council received a proposal for the micro-cultivation of cannabis.
Under the Town’s bylaws, micro-cultivation is growing a maximum of 600 kg of cannabis for commercial purposes. It is a discretionary use under the Town’s Light Industrial Zoning. But, as it is a discretionary use, it needs to be approved by Town council directly.
The development uses a new technology. The developer will be bringing in two pods, which are converted shipping containers. Inside, the pods are completely optimized for cannabis cultivation.
Council had a few questions, however, before approving the development.
Mayor Nancy Dodds wanted to know if the development needs any permits from the federal or provincial governments.
Administration responded that yes, they do, but getting a development permit from the Town is the first step to getting those permits.
Councillor Amila Gammana wanted to know about the odour, as cannabis is known for having a distinct smell.
Administration said they do not anticipate it as being a problem, as the pods are equipped with air filtration systems.
Council approved the development permit. The development is planned for 5621-58 Ave. Even though they can produce as much as 600 kg under the Town’s bylaws, the developer will only be producing 50 kg to start.
