The Drayton Valley Community Foundation (DVCF) is getting ready to throw its biggest community dinner to date.
Friday night, the DVCF Community Dinner is turning one of the town’s streets into a party. It will cause the closure of a section of Main Street near the clock tower
Twinkling lights will mark the spot, organizers say.
DVCF Executive Director Tara Middlemiss says now that most COVID restrictions are lifted, they wanted to try something special.
“We really wanted to bring the community back together, and we wanted to do something that other towns have been doing for quite a while: a street event,” says Middlemiss.
A full evening is planned, with the White Bull Café serving its famous Bull Burgers, live music from the Mad Jacks, vendors, and the farmers’ market will be running alongside the event. There will also be a beer garden, and Middlemiss says if you miss dinner, they’ll even have food trucks on-site.
The DVCF started doing community dinners in December 2019. While they did their best to keep them going during the pandemic, Middlemiss says it just wasn’t the same.
“When COVID hit, we kind of pivoted, and we were doing some drive-thru community dinners,” she says. “Then eventually we had to shut down completely because of government regulations.”
A small dinner was held in July at Rotary Park.
The latest community dinner is on Aug. 20, starting at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served until 7:30, but the beer gardens will be open and the band playing until 11.
